A new flagship is always a cause for celebration, and Italy’s Ferretti Group did exactly that with its Custom Line 140'. Taking over the top slot in the brand’s semicustom range at just under 400 gross tons, she increases interior volume by more than 30 percent compared to her nearest sibling, the Custom Line 120'. That equates to about 3,200 square feet (300 square meters) of floor space, just on the inside of the yacht.

This 140-foot (42.6-meter) composite trideck is a collaboration between Italian designer Francesco Paszkowski and the Ferretti Group for exterior and interior design (the latter, together with Margherita Casprini). According to Paszkowski, the racy exterior lines draw on “new stylistic cues from other design universes, such as automotive and residential architecture, in line with today’s trends in contemporary living.”

The Custom Line 140' is the Italian brand's new flagship. Inspired by automotive and residential design, it offers more than 2,150 square feet of alfresco deck space.

The powerful profile and dark strip glazing are eye-catching. Though these styling motifs recall other models in the Custom Line fleet, distinctive detailing such as the bulwark handrails with Y-shaped stantions lend the yacht a distinguished personality all her own. Wedge-shaped styling shouts performance. Equipped with a pair of 2,638-horsepower MTUs, she reportedly tops out at 21.5 knots with a cruising speed of 18 knots.

According to Ferretti Group Chief Commercial Officer Stefano de Vivo, what makes her interesting for American yachtsmen, in particular, is “the combination of high performance and reduced draft, which allows her to cruise in shallow waters like the Bahamas.” The draft of less than 8 feet is largely thanks to her lightweight, hybrid composite construction.

Custom Line Atelier, which is CRN’s in-house design studio, oversaw the interior design by Paszkowski and Casprini. Since the 140' is part of a semi-custom series, each yacht can be personalized. Owners can choose from a catalog of top Italian designer brands, with materials in neutral tones that range from dark oak parquet soles to ivory leather and oatmeal fabrics. Ribbed and mirrored surfaces add visual interest, while the full-height windows, a floating staircase in the main lobby and ceiling heights of close to 7 feet (2.1 meters) make for bright, airy interiors.

The full-beam master stateroom on the main deck forward has a walk-in closet and the option of a private balcony that extends out from the hull. Guests have four ensuite staterooms on the lower deck, and there are quarters for seven crew.

More than 2,150 square feet (200 square meters) of alfresco space is distributed among the open aft decks, a foredeck sunbathing and seating area that can be shaded by an awning, and the sundeck, which has a hot tub. There’s also a beach club in the stern with a fold-down transom. A side-opening garage abaft the engine room can house a tender with room for water toys, including a personal watercraft.

The Custom Line 140' is certified to International Maritime Organization Tier III standards and fitted with selective catalytic reduction units that scrub exhaust gases clean of toxic nitrogen oxides. These are bulky systems, and the Ferretti engineering team designed them into an engine room that is still readily accessible for maintenance. Naiad 525 stabilizer fins provide motion control underway and at anchor. For added guest comfort, there is the option of fitting Seakeeper gyros.

Custom Line was founded in 1996 to create a high-end range of semi-custom flybridge yachts in composite for demanding owners. Today, the yard’s offerings are divided into planing and displacement lines, with seven models to let customers upgrade over time. The Custom Line 140' is the latest and largest iteration of this strategy, which has won over hundreds of owners.
