Vijay Mallya, chairman of the UB Group, which includes Kingfisher beer and an airline by the same name, purchased the yacht, formerly used by the Emir of Qatar, in 2006. The list price at the time was $113 million, although the sales amount was not disclosed. The yacht includes 16 lower-deck guest staterooms, a panoramic master suite, a Jacuzzi and a private balcony. Fully equipped for business, the yacht features an opulent interior, several elevators, a helipad, gym with sauna, Jacuzzi, one of Elton John’s baby grand pianos, plus a beauty salon, massage room, full medical suite and expansive deck spaces. The interior décor captures elements of Mallya’s Indian heritage augmented by his exquisite personal art collection, with masterworks that are said to include works by Renoir and Chagall. Indian Empress is fully equipped for meetings, has a helicopter and, in the cargo hold, two Mercedes cars. Kingfisher’s top executives convene aboard periodically but, when unoccupied, the yacht, manned by an international crew of 20, is available for charter in the Mediterranean and Indian Ocean. The semi-displacement steel hull can reach a 26-knot top speed thanks to three 10,000 hp MTU 20V1163 engines. Mallya, like other yacht owners on this list, is also invested in sports and owns Kingfisher airline. His fortune is holding at 1 billion, according to Forbes’ 2012 list.
