Italy is the largest yacht building nation in the world. Its shipyards create vessels of all sizes and shapes. One shipyard, however, located in the town of Itri, halfway between Rome and Naples, specializes in small yachts—very small yachts. Under the direction of Elisabetta Fantasia and Giuseppe Capobianco, Model Maker Group (MMG) creates highly detailed scale models primarily for yards that build full-size vessels. With the Covid-19 crisis upon us, MMG has adapted its facilities to ensure the safety of its craftsmen and keep its production running. Measures it has taken include:

  • Maximizing use of the large spaces at its headquarters to guarantee the maintenance of safe distancing
  • Implementation of all safety devices, in addition to thermometers, gloves, masks, specific hand sanitizers, etc.
  • Sanitization of workspaces and tools
  • Staggering work hours and shifts in to avoid gatherings in common areas
  • Subscription to a special health insurance plan for workers
  • Ensuring its scale models are built in safe areas to protect customers

“With the new production paradigms the pandemic has imposed on us, we will face new challenges for design: new solutions, new ideas, new concepts for creating our yachts safely and new ways to show our innovations,” says Elisabetta Fantasia, MMG CEO. “This will be possible through our scale models, which will remain a key element in presenting new proposals to owners and dealers around the world. At upcoming boat shows, stand settings will be different, and we will be ready for new challenges and to help turn new ideas into reality,” adds Giuseppe Capobianco, General Manager of Model Maker Group.
