The International SeaKeeper Society (ISKS) will hold its annual Bal de la Mer gala event in San Francisco this year, the first in 15 years hosted outside of Monaco. In another first, the ISKS has chosen to honor a group instead of an individual. The Sargasso Sea Alliance (SSA) will be recognized for its work preserving the oceans. Formed in 2010 under the direction of the government of Bermuda, SSA has worked to protect the Sargasso Sea, home to endangered and threatened species including sea turtles, humpback whales and sperm whales. Active Interest Media founder and CEO Skip Zimbalist will chair the gala. On hand will be Honorary Committee Chair and ISKS founding member Patty Elkus, as well as the ISKS Honorary Committee: Dr. Sylvia Earle, Fabien Cousteau, Jean-Michel Cousteau, Gary Jobson, Wendy Benchley, Dr. Walter Munk and Zandra Rhodes. The Bal de la Mer will be held at the St. Francis Yacht Club on September 9. Al Jardine of The Beach Boys will premier his new music video “Don’t Fight the Sea.”
