Feel-Good Yachting

While the yachting industry may be intrinsically focused on luxury and pleasure, many crews and owners do more than their share to give back to the world. Some of the recent efforts have not gone unnoticed.

At Last Gives Back

The charter yacht At Last and her crew are often in the Bahamas. Beyond hosting numerous charter guests over the past years, they have had an opportunity to get involved with the community. A relationship with an orphanage began when chief stewardess Joanna Farrell opted out of the usual birthday celebration to do something different and visited a children’s home in Nassau instead. It was such a great visit that she and the crew have been back many times since. The orphanage, located in Nassau, also provides temporary housing for children whose parents cannot afford to take care of them. The home receives no subsidies and relies on contributions. The crew has donated not only toys and supplies—everything from linens to a power generator—but also percentages of their charter gratuities as well as monetary gifts collected from friends.

Big Fish Aids Relief Efforts in Fiji

The expedition and charter yacht Big Fish, located in the Pacific, recently landed in Fiji with a hull-full of much needed supplies for the islands, which were hit by Tropical Cyclone Evan in mid-December. Luckily, at 147 feet (45m), this particular yacht can hold plenty of supplies. The load included about $30,000 worth of bedding, fresh water, clothes and school supplies. Large donations collected in New Zealand and YachtAid Global, a support network that uses megayachts to deliver supplies to developing countries in need, made this relief mission possible.
